Collective Ideas

I've been working on an initiative that encompasses the concept of a Collective Idea. I won't explain the details yet except to say it's amazing on what can be accomplished when everyone is aligned with the same goal. The Last Image

I just finished reading a great book called the Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. If you haven't read it make sure to pick up a copy. Not only was is a phenomenal book allowing you to peer into the soul of a dying man. But it also invokes questions surrounding your accomplishments in life; future goals and your legacy. Relating that to photography, I've already asked myself what are my desired goals and accomplishments. That's the easy part. My desired goals are to one day shoot a photo session for "Baby Couture, Esquire, Modern Weddings and Dwell. For my accomplishments, I want to shoot portraits that transform images into art.

Now with regards to my "Last Image" that can be represent my legacy? That takes a little bit more time and effort to answer. At first my mind races to capturing images of Africa's culture and wildlife. But I can't also forget to pay homage to my birth country Jamaica by photographing the rising mist off the Blue Mountains, the beautiful Jamaican culture or just my footprints in the sand. Or I should also pay tribute to my home country Canada and make sure to capture our historical Inuit culture or breath taking wildlife of whales jumping across the ocean. Or perhaps even a chance to photograph people of interest like Barak Obama or my personal crush Haile Berry.

While going through the infinite possibilities it then occurred to me. My "Last Image" should invoke feelings of my personal legacy...me and my family. Easy right?!?! Well I've come to realize that I go to such great lengths trying to capture great moments of my family that I forget to put my self in more than half those pictures as well. Hence going forward along with my goals and accomplishments I'm going to make sure my "Last Image" will be images of me enjoying my time with my family. Now all that is left is to capture my "Last Image" is to master my camera's timer and remote.

If you've read my profile you know that I initially took pictures to capture special moments of my family and friends. Well today I want to honour someone who inspired me to purchase my first camera and capture their picture.

My daughter, Jasmine who was born 14 years today. Happy Birthday Jasmine...you are reason why photography was created. Continue to grow more beautiful with every passing year. Though I wish like every other father that you stay "Daddy's little Girl". I only ask that you allow me to capture those moments as you continue to grow.

If you reading this I hope you are reflecting back on when, how and why you took your first picture or purchased your first camera. If it brings back memories, please share. When did you take your first picture and of what? Why did you purchase your first camera? And What inspired you to start your photography business?

"Accounting for Taste"

Hey All

I'm trying to catch up on my reading and recently read an article called "Accounting for Taste" in a Psychology Today Mag from the writer Eric Gardner. Psychology to Photography??? I know I know where is the transition, right? My major in University was Psychology but the transition makes sense...maybe I'll explain one day.

Anyway...Eric went on to write a brilliant article about our choices in art and music and what that says about our personality.

I've took the liberty to paraphrase the article but keep in mind there are opposite sides to each of these styles that have both positive and negative attributes. I chose to just elaborate on the positive but you can read the article for more details.

The Taste Hunters, enjoy discovering new artistic material and influencing the taste of others. Their openness correlates to a great range of taste. And are constantly sampling new music, scouring movies and visiting art museums.

The Thrill Seekers, are extroverts that are lively, active and social people that crave sensory excitement in their art. They maybe attracted to abstract or surreal art from such artists like Jackson Pollock. They also enjoy music with vocals as they are drawn to human voice.

The Self-Medicators, feeds off raw emotional songs and gravitate to emotionally turbulent art. They utilize inspirational message as self affirmation and self medication and often focus on content rather than structure. Art can regulate their moods from melancholic or uplifting music, books, movies or pictures.

While I don't like to assing myself into any one style, but it begs the question "what style best describes me"??? Based on my own perception of my self I think I would be a "Taste Hunter". But if you ask my wife I would probably be a "Self Medicator" All said and done I think I would like other to see me as a "Thrill Seeker" but I'm not sure why.

You tell me. Based on my favourite pics of 2008, what style do you think fits me better? The Taste Hunter, the Thrill Seeker or the Self Medicator. Then let me know what style fits you and why. And even try to list some of the styles of your favourite photographers like the photographers I've listed on the side of the blog. Who knows maybe they'll offer their opinion of their style as well.

I just going through My top 5 Influential Photographers list for 2008 and thought to share it with you all. Keep in mind this is no official ranking by any means but simply photographers that has influenced me throughout 2008. Feel free to comment or add your top 5 as well.

My Top 5 Photographer Influencers for 2008 (okay...I couldn't narrow it down to just 5 photographers so they are segmented into themes)

5.Dennis Hammond and Paris Whittingham These photographers I was able to meet at David Jay's Free to Succeed Workshop in NY. I like to think we are all at the beginning of our photography career so it is great to view their successes and accomplishments throughtout the year. Â And ofcourse, it motivates me to better my photography business to their level as well. Check out their latest blogs and don't forget to leave a comment or two.

4. Mike Larson, Fred Egan and Sara France. Not only do they offer great advice towards images, workflow and branding for your photography business. But they were instrumental in helping me organize a personal project called the Camera Cruise workshop. Mike, Fred and Sara your feedback and positive vibes will always be appreciated by my wife and myself...thanks much.

3. Sandy (Sam) Puc and Heather Rivlin. Their tireless efforts to photograph subjects in situations that are not always ideal is a true inspiration and a testament of the spirit. If you are not familiar with these photographers, Sam is the co-founder of the NILMDTS organization that I'm a part of and Heather is the Toronto region co-ordinator. Thank you both for your words of encouragement prior to me assisting in my first remembrance photography session. Your advice and encouragement was needed and did not go-unnoticed. You can always count on me for any future assignments,big or small.

2.[b]ecker. This year, I've learned more from this photographer than any other photographers combined. His [b]school videos and forum is invaluable to your business and I suggest checking out [b]school for any answers regarding your photography business. When you meet him in person you can't help but to get caught up in his energy which in turns positively influences your photography business. [b]ecker my only question is where do you get the energy?

Jasmine Star. Connecting with Jasmine, hearing her story and capturing her wisdom made a lasting impression on me. Even though my wife was not able to attend Jasmine's "church sermon" (those who have attended a workshop with her will know what I mean by "church service") she was still affected by my positive encounter with Jasmine. Jasmine your continued words of encouragement is appreciated by my wife and I more than you know.

David Jay. Attending David Jay's Free toSucceedworkshop in NY hands down was the best money spent for my photography business this year. The confidence, sincerity and workflow gained during the workshop was invaluable and I've made sure to add these philosphies into my business platform. David, please continue to be a positive influence for us photographers...God Bless.

Amelia Lyon's Blog: Something for my Dad

I hope it is not too late...I guess it is never is but please pay a visit to Amelia Lyon's blog. In particular her post called: "Something for Dad". Not only she is an awesome photographer but she is also an amazing person. Anyway we can help her cause would be appreciated.

SOMETHING FOR MY DAD

As many of my blog followers may agree, I am definitely a picture-taker and not a writer. I do my best to write positively and according to my entries in order to describe the many adventures I experience as a photographer, mother, and wife. Well this time I am writing as a daughter and I ask my readers, in advance, for forgiveness as I stumble over this blog post in order to put into words the way that I feel about an unfortunate trial that has been placed in the lap of my family (in fact, as I am trying to type this my heart is pounding so loud I can hear it in my ears). This is for my dad.

Earlier this year he found himself randomly falling down and even found himself having trouble walking and lifting his right leg. He went in for some testing to see what was going on, only to find that there would be no solution and that he would never walk normal again. To make the long story short he was diagnosed with ALS (or many of you may know it as Lou Gehrig's disease, please click here to find a site that describes exactly what this disease is and how it can effect the victims that get diagnosed with it). In simple terms, this disease causes muscles to stop reacting to the brain's commands and eventually takes over the whole body. My dad was diagnosed with ALS officially in September and since then he has lost complete use of his right leg and his left leg is now fading faster than the right. The progression of this disease takes a different toll on each one of its victims, with my dad his ALS is progressing rapidly and he is already in an electrical wheelchair.

Now here is the reason for this post, I am reaching out to the world for help. I already know that my dad won't survive this, but with help, he can be comfortable in his last months (hopefully years). I am auctioning off a family portrait session to help raise funds that will be put to helping him with medical bills, rebuilding a handicap bathroom, or the purchase of a wheelchair accessible van. While I know that one family portrait session won't pay for all of this, every little bit will help, especially since my dad hasn't been able to work since August. I am starting the auction bidding at $250. I usually charge $500 for our portrait sittings. The sitting will include approxiamately two hours of coverage, online proofing, and a $100 print credit. There has already been a savings account set up for him and everything donated is tax deductible. I really appreciate any help in this effort, I plan to do a few more auctions in the near future, but this is my first attempt.

So You Think You Can Dance...again

Okay okay. I'll admit it...I love "So You Think You Can Dance".

Yes a 35 year old man loves to watch different styles of dance wishing he could master at least one of them (particular hip hop ). Maybe it's because it reminds me of back in the day when I use to break dance with my crew in grade 5. Or the joy I receive when I watch my daughter perform an African/Caribbean dance recital. Or even the pleasure I receive when I watch my young sons (2 and 6) trying to mimic the hiphop flips they just seen on the show. It could be all those things but it's probably the envy I feel knowing I can't perform latin dance with my wife as flawlessly executed from the great dancers in the show. Or for at least now...one day my wife and I'll take lessons and master the Tango!!! For now I will continue to watch and cheer on my favourite dancers.

And I'll even go as far as to watch them perform live and in person. Again, this 35 year old man was in tightly packed seats watching (and cheering) his favourite dancers perform moves that he could only wish he could do. When my wife heard that the top 20 were going to head to Toronto to perform she did not hesitate to purchase tickets for the family and life long friends the Goode's. Could you believe it was sold out in less than a minute!!! Not only did we enjoy the show immensely but we even stayed around like crazy fans to get pictures and autographs. Could you believe the dancers stuck around signing autographs to at least 1:30am. Props to you dancers!!!

The Sweetest Thing...

A great dessert created for our anniversary by the awesome members at Roger Mooking's restaurant Kultura.

I wont start with cliche line like "it seems like only yesterday" to describe when I first met the love of my life because it isn't simply true. I met Nicole in high school in 3rd period Geometry class and though the time and our relationship advanced rapidly it was a pace that I enjoyed immensely. Thank you for inspiring me through the last 16 years of our lives together. Thank you for our 7 years of marriage together. Thank you for 4 beautiful children that you gave me. And thank for your continuous love, support and inspiration.

With the Month of October being recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, The Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation holds itsAnnual Fund Drive for six weeks starting in mid-September and ending in October.

President Ronald Reagan enacted Proclamation 5890 in October of 1988 to recognize that each year, approximately a million pregnancies in the United States alone end in miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of a newborn child. Reagan stated, "A national observance offers us the opportunity to increase our understanding of the great tragedy involved in the deaths of unborn or newborn babies. Here are some cute photos of little Vincent and Nyla. I didn't have to scout any locations, we decided to shoot in the area where they are most comfortable in...their Backyard. If you look closely you'll be able to spot their younger sibling in the pictures as well. I edited these pictures while playing the movie "Drumline" as I thought the music and the colours matched their energy!!! Enjoy.

Free to Succeed Tour - NY

I'm still beaming from attending the Free to Succeed workshop last week. I flew down from Toronto Canada to attend and I was soooo glad I went. I don't know where to begin. From connecting with another photography network guru that I admire tremendously, [b]ecker. To connecting with David Luebke from Couture Book. From networking with other photographers who also want to grow their photography business. From hearing a great "I was DETERMINED" sermon delivered from Jasmine Star which had a lasting effect on me. To finally, connecting with David Jay who presented us with great a amount of information of which I'll be utilizing his methods for many years to come. Thank you to you all.

I met some great photographers at this workshop...let's promise to stay in touch so that we can continue to inspire each other. Sorry I did not get a shot of you Parris but many thanks for flagging down a cab for me and directing me back to the airport. Parris Whittingham Photography

Ahh Couture book, I finally got to touch and feel the many textures of Couture books. I know it sounds perverse but wow these books are amazing!!! Dave, thanks for answering my many many questions.

The day finally had finally arrived and went...the birthday of my youngest son Aiden at the seasoned ripe age 0f 2. It almost like it was yesterday when he was born fighting for his life like a Lion in Zion.

It feels like it was yesterday when he was born fighting for his life like a LION in ZION. Actually that is how he got his middle name Lionel (a heart of a lion). After seeing Aiden for the 1st time I knew he would make it. In fact, later that day I went to the gift shop and bought his 1st year birthday card...it was a picture of a lion.

I like to thank God for his all his blessings, my wife and kids for their strength, friends for positive vibes (ironically Aiden's shares the same birthday as his godmother Angela) and Jaida
for watching over your brothers and sister. We forever miss you.

Renrick + Melody

I was hounored when Renrick and Melody asked me to take their 10th year anniversary pictures. As we got to know each other, they reveled their previous experiences with another photographer on their wedding day. Though they recited their story in a humourous fashion after hearing their plight I was determined to capture this joyous occasion in the prestigious manner it deserves. What's impressive is that both of them wore their original wedding dress and suit for the photo shoot. I wish I could say the same regarding my tuxedo. Much respect to Melody and Renrick. In the words of Melody this gallery is rightfully named "10 Years Later...the Journey Continues."

Bills vs. Steelers in T.O.

I got a chance to watch an awesome Buffalo Bills versus the Pittsburgh Steelers with my brother and brother in-law in Toronto. Ofcourse, it's not comparable to Bills vs. Dolphins game that I attended in Buffalo a while back but at least the seats were warmer. Overall the game was very exciting but it was disappointing my Steelers did not pull win.

That being said, I feel Rogers took a big gamble bringing the NFL games into T.O. Not because Torontonians will not be interested but more so that most Torontonians will not be willing to pay the suggested high price point. As the first NFL game in TO was not sold out it remains to be seen how the future games will turn out. Time will tell...but it doesn't look promising. Just my humble opinion.

Jamaica Family Reunion-08

I just came back from a whirlwind vacation in Jamaica to attend my family reunion and my cousin's Wedding. It was amazing for so many reasons. It was great to come home and see al my family from Jamaica and abroad (from US to UK). Plus, we also got a chance to welcome new members to the family from my cousin's wedding union was so fitting in this trips' theme about family. Words cannot explain the feelings I felt throughout the family reunion as this is the first trip where I've came home without the able to see my mami (my grandma) who is the foundation of the family name.
